people are people
Los Angeles, US - Astana, Kazakhstan
Algorithmic sound installation reflecting the interaction of ideologies from various cultures through the connectivity of technology and media. New ideas from a culture are represented by spoken words of differing languages. Spoken words enter the algorithm as sound inputs and their characteristics shape the outcome of the sound. The individual words, or cultural ideas, are compounded into a larger sound, representing the overall interaction of ideologies over time. New spoken words, or new ideas, articulate the compounded sound, showing how new ideas come from and bring to life the old ideas in a brand new way.
This piece was developed using Max MSP for digital synthesis. It was recorded using four people speaking the proverb “people are people” in different languages. The voices triggered sinusoidal oscillators as well as a sampler according to their unique qualities.
"people are people" won first prize in the 2016 "Silk Road" exhibition in Astana, Kazakhstan.
